Tony Soprano was absolutely a sociopath. I think Walt correctly even points out at one point that Tony never slapped a woman because they want the public to like his character. The stripper episode, which felt forced, was done so on purpose because the producers were appalled that the public were seeing these mobsters as lovable teddy bears. So they brute forced an episode to make them seem as appalling as possible. There was a reason an "aryan stacy" was cast as the stripper who is exploited, then degraded, and eventually murdered. Originally Tony had a line dismissing her death, but the actor realized that the episode was too brutal and had them change it to something which at least made his character seem sympathetic in contrast to the rest of them (because he was wisely worried for his own career/popularity since the 100 IQ normies can't separate a an actor from a character).
Also, when you guys are talking about how the emotional Italian man can't make it in this strange land America, still controlled by the ice cold WASPs, and therefore has no option but to resort to mafia crime, it's just completely bizarre. You realize this is the 2000's and not the 1900's right? Maybe that made sense for Vito Corleone in the Godfather II. How are all these Italian lawyers, doctors, even blue collar businessmen, civil servants, union workers, etc. getting ahead? Especially in the NYC area where the loud Italian/Jewish culture is dominant anyways. Some are even leaning into it like that Italian guy who takes his son to CostCo, whom I love just because all the "Elite Human Capital" people are critical of him. You guys almost sound like those black lawyers in Hollywood shows who are like, "Shauntavius ain't have no choice. He done have to rape that bitch, shoot the clerk, and steal the school bus running over all them old people that was coming out the nursing home because he a black man in America! He ain't grow up in Minnesota like you. He on the run from them Alt Rights that was trying to lynch him", leaving all the women on the jury in tears. Seriously slightly cringe, though. But the rest of it was OK.
Nice to hear you guys catch up on your stories.
Few points of disagreement here.

You’d love Mad Men. It’s all about masculinity and men navigating status hierarchies.
