What’s the name of the classicist and author you discussed at the beginning? Something Hillman?

Loving the conversation so far. The part that scandalized Walt (ancient medicated dildos) reminded me of a thread by Owen Cyclops (@owenbroadcast on Xitter) wherein he researched witches a la the Salem witch trials. One of the conclusions he discovered was that the witch’s broomstick likely originates in the practice of rubbing medicated staves on your genitals either as actual medical practice or as a method of substance absorption. Those called “witches” were likely women who were given remedies for something, applied them to highly-absorbent genital tissue via something quite similar to a “medicated dildo,” and suddenly tripped so hard they laughed maniacally, talked in delirium, and thought they were flying. (Not on X rn so I won’t try to find the thread, sorry.)

Point being: as much as it rankles my tradcath-ism, I wouldn’t be surprised if the BVM took medicine in a similar manner.
